Jacky, wasn't he called Jude after his father, or did I imagine  
that?  True, nobody ever seems to address him by that name.

Hardy quite often makes his characters, to some extent at least,  
personify abstract qualities. (Think of Gabriel Oak, whose very name  
is a give-away - or, indeed, Jude or Sue themselves.)

I feel this tends to detract from the complexity of Hardy's  
characters making them appear somewhat one-dimensional, not  
altogether unlike  those  17C 'Comedy of Humours'   characters who  
are distorted to fit into an extremely confined personality mold.
