You misunderstand me. What shocked me was not the harsh truth that these things happened, which of course they did and continue to do so today, but that Jackie concludes that ''Certainly in the working classes babies tended to be viewed perhaps more in the light of a dog having pups or a cat having kittens'. There are many examples of working class people struggling, against the odds, to give their lives, and deaths, dignity and to state that these people viewed themselves as merely whelping is offensive. My own grandmother told me the story of a neighbour of hers who used knitting needles to abort her unwanted pregnancy and nearly dying herself. One does not have to conclude that she thought as little of the foetus or herself as you implied. I am sure we both support progressive values, it just seemed to add insult to injury to formulate your views in the way you chose to do so. I also regret having responded to Rosemarie's invite to respond, and wish I had written to you
personally rather than on the forum, but having done so, I shall continue here and hope you understand it was the way you phrased it that I was reacting to.

  best wishes
