There was a short piece on TH written by John Sutherland in the Sunday
Telegraph's "Seven" magazine yesterday, published as part of their
regular "The insider" column:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.jhtml?view=DETAILS&grid=&xml=/arts/2007/12/30/svinsider130.xml

[If this doesn't work, try going to the main
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/ page, and put "sutherland thomas hardy" in
the search box]

However, I'm not entirely sure I get the comments about 2008 seeing
the "anniversary of the Glum Old Fellow's 180th death-day," which
seems to imply that Hardy died in 1820. Sutherland also repeats a few
(well-known) tales related to TH's funeral arrangements. These legends
are (apparently) still alive in West Country pubs, although I've never
heard anyone mention them in the ones I frequent!

Have a very happy New Year!
