[Hardy-l] Folk traditions

I wonder if anyone on the forum could tell me what books on folklore or folk
customs Hardy might have had access to when writing his novels? What I am
trying to ascertain is as to how far Hardy's information was orally
transmitted and far it was obtained through the printed word? I receive the
distinct impression that much of his knowledge on folk culture may have been
transmitted through his grandmothers and other family members, but would
appreciate information on  any actual written sources members know he may
have utilized.
