I watched this again on Monday evening. The seasons were terrific (a
pity about the performances!). It starts really promisingly but gets
slower and slower before deciding to end on a positive, most unHardylike
(apparently re-edited note) as Fitzpiers asks Grace what she feels about
him only to get the reply, 'nothing', as she walks away from him to the
cheers of the modern audience. See Dale Kramer's account (received from
Emily Woof, the actress playing Grace, for how this was re-edited at the
request of the American distributors) in "Thomas Hardy on Screen"
(C.U.P., 2006)p.152.
