"Growed wheat" is wheat which has begun to sprout, I think.

Yes, Will, that's the way I read it, and there is an interesting short
discussion on the significance of the 'growed wheat' which is worth reading
in  Andrew Radford's excellent 'Thomas Hardy and the Survivals of Time.
