I thought the list might be interested to know that Terry Eagleton
reviews both the Claire Tomalin and Ralph Pite biographies of Hardy in
the current issue of Harper's Magazine (November 2007, pp. 89-94). The
review, entitled "Buried in the Life: Thomas Hardy and the Limits of
Biographies," spends as much time talking about biography in general,
and Eagleton's own perspective on Hardy in particular, as it does
examining the books which are its putative focus, but that's perhaps to
be expected. It's still, I think, a good read.
I now have a reasonably significant stack of responses to the Tomalin
and Pite texts put aside, and I will begin uploading those reviews to
the "Reviews" section of TTHA's "Life" page in the near future.
