[Hardy-l] Trivia question

Dear all-

I am reading John Cowper Powys's *Maiden Castle.  *The protagonist Dud
No-man refers to Henchard as Trenchard.  Was this an earlier version of the
character's name?  Any idea of why Powys's might have used this variation?
