regional historical resonances off the  scent.  



I would suggest that in the case of Tess, Hardy felt that ‘Tess of  the de 
Turbervilles’ or ‘Tess of the Turbervilles’ would have sounded too clumsy  and 
alliterative as titles, without the euphony of Two on a Tower.
