There is also the awkwardness of the neighboring Devonshire family of 
Trenchards being aristocrats.- Of undoubted noble lineage, with connections 
to knights of the realm and, at the time of Hardy's *MC,* prominent in 
government and military circles, this Devonshire family was highly 
respected (although not noted for high IQs) for service to the Empire - 
notably in India and Africa.

IF Hardy had been "borrowing" the name of the Devonshire Trenchards he was 
at least smart enough to set his (*MC*) story back a few decades.
