Dear all,
    Back from Dorchester I am sorting out my mail and it has been an
interesting experience to read all the contributions in one go. Betty, I
think, mentions Jesus's reply "I am he". In Exodus 3, 13-14, when Moses asks
God his name, the answer he receives is "I AM THAT I AM" (in the Authorized
version). In the French traditional translations the reply is "JE SUIS CELUI
QUI EST", that is "I AM THE ONE WHO IS".
Does this help our understanding of the poem?
