Hi David --Take a look at *Thomas Hardy Remembered* ed, Martin Ray -- or 
Gibson's book along the same lines -- if you want a more rounded picture. 
Neighbours and maid servants are not always the most reliable witnesses -- 
I'm not certain I'd want my neighbour giving me a character ref!! 
(especially when my smoke alarm shrieks out in the middle of the night when 
someone's grilling a steak or if my hens are being particularly sqwawky at 
6 am)
