I should perhaps clarify further that, as Hardy points out in a note
added to "The Return of the Native" in 1912, he had appropriated the
name from the actual Halstock Quiet Woman and relocated it. He also
points out that his fictional Quiet Woman was based in some of its
features on the Red Lion at Winfrith (see Denys Kay Robinson, "The
Landscape of Thomas Hardy."

Since there may be room for misunderstanding, I thought it might be
worth pointing out that this Quiet Woman House, located in Halstock in
West Dorset, is not, of course, the Quiet Woman Inn central to "The
Return of the Native" and mentioned in "The Fiddler of the Reels."
Hardy's site for the Quiet Woman Inn is located on the Tincleton Road,
east of Dorchester and Stinsford. It's long been the Duck Dairy Farm,
before that was known as the Duck Inn, and before that as the
Travellers' Rest.

Good Afternoon,

Quiet Woman House has changed a little over the past 300 years but it's
still going strong!

Formally known as The Quiet Woman Inn until the late 1980's when the
inn finally closed and was converted to offer bed & breakfast
accommodation.

If anyone has any relevant history or stories we would be most
interested as would our many guest's.

Please see the web site below for more information.
