Dear Marc,
There is a rather comprehensive article on Hardy and Nietzsche in The
Oxford Reader's Companion to Hardy, ed. Norman Page, (2000), which
begins:

"Whereas Hardy may have felt some interest in Nietzsche's criticism
of Christianity and views on tragedy and aesthetics, his overall
attitude to the German philosopher was negative."

The article goes on to cite several of Hardy's references to N in the
Letters, and in The Literary Notebooks, which were negative indeed.
It also cites two critical articles, M. May, Nietzsche and the
Spirit of Tragedy, (1990), and Eugene Williamson "Thomas Hardy and
Nietzsche: The Reasons", Comparative Literature Studies (1978).

Hoping you are able to follow through and access some of these
materials. The Oxford P. article alone should give you some
interesting insights.

All the Best,

Betty Cortus
