[Hardy-l] Nietzsche and Hardy (and G. Eliot)

Nietzsche's scorn for George Eliot's Christian morality (Twilight of  
the Idols) would, I think, be applicable to Hardy as well, that they  
both succumb to an untenable lovingkindness.

My study of Nietzsche is beyond rusty. But I seem to recall his  
stating that mercy is an option for the Over/Super/Uber-man, but can  
never be a code or virtue, for that is how the weak, through the  
Jewish and Christian religions, have inverted the natural order of  
strength over weakness.
