Nietzsche's scorn for George Eliot's Christian morality (Twilight of
the Idols) would, I think, be applicable to Hardy as well, that they
both succumb to an untenable lovingkindness.
My study of Nietzsche is beyond rusty. But I seem to recall his
stating that mercy is an option for the Over/Super/Uber-man, but can
never be a code or virtue, for that is how the weak, through the
Jewish and Christian religions, have inverted the natural order of
strength over weakness.
