Twenty years ago I read Lawrence's SPOW and several biographies, and
could not make up my mind about the man's sexual orientation. Though it
seems likely he was raped by the Bey of Deraa -- while his published
account in SPOW is a bit elliptical he supposedly admitted it explicitly
to Mrs. G.B. Shaw -- and probably suffered serious gender confusion as a
result, I eventually concluded that he was probably asexual
http://www.kinseyinstitute.org/publications/PDF/PrauseGrahamPDF.pdf or
close to it. I often wonder why nobody in the literary realm seems
interested in that kind of diagnosis, especially in cases where no clear
sexual orientation is supported by objective evidence.
As for Hardy, given the amount of time he spent chasing after women,
albeit ineffectually, I would have a hard time classifying him as gay.
Having cordial friendships with gay men does not mean you are gay. I
find gay men are often brilliant and entertaining conversationalists --
at least they can talk about things besides football.
