Have looked at your intersting theories on the why and wherefores of Tess.
However I registered with the Hardy website as I was merely trying to find out
the name of the Dorset Folk song that the women chopping turnips sang in the
latest BBC version of Tess. From your PS i would think you are in the USA, so
wouldnt have seen this series.
The BBC make wonderful series of the classics and it was so easy to feel the
bitter cold as they chopped turnips, it was worse grubbing them out of the
frosty ground. It was a very moving scene and the song they sang to cheer
themselves was very winsome and a bit melancholy. I do of course read Hardy, but
the TV scenes are often very beautiful.
If you have any idea of the name of the song, I would be grateful, I sing in
a choir (for fun) and one of the members is a Dorset Folk singer, but he
didnt see the series.
Yours Sincerely
Janet Byrne
