Did anyone ever reply to this?  If not you might try *Thomas Hardy's 
"Facts: Notebook,* ed  William Greenslade (Ashgate, 2004) which provides an 
edited version of Hardy's notes on local events, legal cases etc.

didn't Hardy find inspiration for them in some actual tragedy that he read 
about in the papers? If so, would somebody know more about it?
