[Hardy-l] Tess' rage

I would add that Tess' temper and violence come from her aristocratic
lineage and blood, even as her natural beauty and passivity come from
her plebeian background.
She's this unique figure who is too proud and educated for her rural
setting, but too poor and passive to survive beyond her background –
truly torn in the middle. So she goes passive and accepting when Angel
rejects her (instead of arguing with him, or playing a pity card), yet
she turns violent with Alec and proud in seeking any help for her
troubles. This is part of her tragedy, along with numerous other
factors (her social circumstance, fate, poor timing, Angel's prudery,
her father's vanity, and so on).
