[Hardy-l] BBC: Tess

It is a long time ago since I read Tess so I have to admit that I didn't spot the invented scenes. I thought the loss of ambiguity re: seduction or rape showed a lack of courage, given modern sensibilities, and that they went for the easy and less controversial option for today. However, my kids - despite my coy fast-forwarding through the 'misty scenes', really enjoyed it. My youngest remarked, as Tess trudged yet again through the wind and the rain, 'Well, she always brings the weather with her!" and later, with genuine exasperation, "Why does it always have to rain on Tess!" I have had several conversations about Tess and TH with various people who I would not have expected to do so and three of them said they now wanted to read the book - so it can't have been all bad - even if it was over-popularised for some tastes. Good TV for a Sunday night though - better than
'Heartbeat'!!

best wishes
