PS Yes we digress to personal matters on occasion (as also happens in 
classroom seminars)but it's mostly Hardy, and that's what counts.

Whatever Hardy thought about Tess, and he himself admitted to being in love 
with her, we are dealing with art here and textual effects not raw life. It 
can be very dangerous to confuse the two.
