[Hardy-l] Two Mile Wood

As far as I can see this is a lost cause - the plan to build at a "relief
road" across
ancient downland, ancient woodland & several SSSIs (designated sites of
special scientific
interest) was rejected by the Department of the Environment at a public
enquiry.
West Dorset District Council / Dorset County Council decided to ignore the
DoE
ruling - and using the excuse of the 2010 Sailing Olympics - are going ahead
anyway.

In terms of Hardy topography, it will totally destroy the peace of the
hamlet of Bincombe
& surrounding downland - the setting of 'The Melancholy Hussar'.

When I raised the subject at the THS CoM, I was shouted down - Weymouth
needs
the new road. End of story.

There are excellent public transport links between Dorchester & Weymouth.
There is a compelling argument against the massive environmental destruction
caused by building yet another unnecessary road - a road which will link
neatly
with the dual carriageway which has torn the heart out of Puddletown Forest
& the once peaceful country of Under the Greenwood Tree & Far from the
Madding Crowd & the bypass which has gourged an enormous cutting on
the very edge of the Max Gate garden,

If there is anything you can do, Rosemarie, to stop this senseless
destruction
of Hardy's heartland, there are many of us in England who would be
eternally grateful!

Bw

Tony Fincham.
