Forum members may be interested in the five 'Thomas Hardy Walks' that Radio Four's Woman's Hour are featuring over the next two weeks - the first of these (on Tess) was today, and is available on listen again:

This was delightful Angelique.
Did you really walk all the way to "Talbothays"from "Marlott" (and so soon
after Vita's birth!) -- I'm impressed. Also impressed by
your South-Western (Wessex) accent. Either I've never noticed it before
or else you made a good job of replicating it. Bravo!
The whole thing made me feel quite nostalgic I must say and I liked the
emphasis on Tess's sensual power and ability to rebound (none of that old
Victorian passive stuff).
I used to think, as a child, that milking a cow was rather a chore. I feel
rather differently about it now!
Thank you again
Rosemarie

Thank you indeed, Angelique--and how wonderful to (literally!) hear from you again. Did anyone else get a chill listening to Gertrude Bugler's sister relating Hardy's words in an approximation of his voice? It may be the closest we come to knowing what he sounded like. . .
Paul Niemeyer
