[Hardy-l] Woman's Hour Walks

The Woman's Hour 'Hardy Walks' were, in fact, recorded in June and we have been waiting for advanced notice of their broadcast since then, although none has been forthcoming. I expect the serialisation of Tess on the BBC proved an opportune moment.
I sadly failed to detect Angelique's 'south western' accent (real or adopted). It was very unclear from the editing who was saying what. Marilyn Leah did the reading - but I don't think she has a 'Wessex' accent either?
Later walks will feature Dorchester and The Mayor of Casterbridge, Fawley and Oxford and Jude, and 'Egdon Heath' and The Return of the Native. They are very short but they all help to raise Hardy's profile even higher I hope.
best,
Jane

Could someone say me in simple words the meaning of the line "our making soon our maker did we deem"? It's in Hardy's poem God's Funeral. I know the sentence order is changed but I cannot get the complete meaning.Â

The God whom we had made/invented ("Our making") we soon deemed to be the God who had made us ("soon our maker did we deem"), which leads into the next line "And what we had imagined we believed" (i.e. we believed in the actual existence of what we had only created in our imaginations).

This was delightful Angelique.
Did you really walk all the way to "Talbothays"from "Marlott" (and so soon
after Vita's birth!) -- I'm impressed. Also impressed by
your South-Western (Wessex) accent. Either I've never noticed it before
or else you made a good job of replicating it. Bravo!
The whole thing made me feel quite nostalgic I must say and I liked the
emphasis on Tess's sensual power and ability to rebound (none of that old
Victorian passive stuff).
I used to think, as a child, that milking a cow was rather a chore. I feel
rather differently about it now!
Thank you again
Rosemarie

Thank you indeed, Angelique--and how wonderful to (literally!) hear from you again. Did anyone else get a chill listening to Gertrude Bugler's sister relating Hardy's words in an approximation of his voice? It may be the closest we come to knowing what he sounded like. . .
