I've read all of Hardy's "big 5" and some of his lesser novels. I've also, read Silas Marner, by Eliott. They put me in somewhat of a similar frame of mind. Both are pastoral England, I believe and have some tragedy. But, Silas Marner has a wonderful upswing of optimism at the end with the resolution of Eppie's custody to Silas. Call me what you want, I love a happy ending.. It makes one strive towards that goal in life and instills hope in the beauty of life. Joy (not gratification) is what life is for finding and joy seems to come from love...a gift Silas gave to the child...try finding that in Tess or in The Mayor of Casterbridge...as great as those novels are to read.
