What you say has merit, I'm sure...you're the publisher. However, not everything is "never" or "always", as you seem to be saying. And as far as Hollywood goes...well, you're right, very little comes out of that place that has anything to do with reality. But, reality sometimes does end up positive....certainly more positive than Hardy had in his mind by the time he got to Tess. I loved the book...I just really disliked the ending. It does not seem credible that a girl with Tess's history would commit murder when all she had to do was to simply leave Alec to go with her rightful partner and legal husband, Angel. That would have been what life is really like. If you're looking for more (in the life of Tess), a contiuation with Angel would have been the more realistic and likely scenario.
