Concerning Hardy and his endings, he did not always have sad ones. Nearly
half his novels had what could be termed a happy ending. Significantly,
most of these were in his earlier books. I think Tomalin's biography
suggests this was at least partly due to pressure from publishers wanting
a happy ending. After having half a dozen books published, Hardy possibly
felt more confident to have the endings he wanted. Also, maybe his
unhappier personal circumstances were changing his outlook on life too.
Certainly most of his latter novels had sad, but incredibly moving,
endings and would not have had the same impact otherwise.
Kind regards,
Tony
>>> Yes, a more "happy" ending would not fit in with Hardy's style, given
his dim view of life. I think that his novels reflect that view. So, >>>
to wish for anything other than a depressing ending from him is useless.
