Joking aside, I wasn't sure, and that's why I asked. I had thought 'this beautiful feminine tissue' might simply refer back to her cheek, her skin, and that the 'practically blank as snow' alluded to the minimum of sorrow she had as yet experienced, despite the tears upon her lashes. I had also read the 'coarse pattern' as a harbinger of the rope-marks she is 'doomed to receive'. I feel quite the innocent abroad.
