Okay...Hardy likely had forethought in his positions, feelings and opinions on the good/evil & right/wrong in Victorian society. But, do you actually think he dreamed up Tess (for example) solely, as a vehicle for expressing nothing but social comment? There is a great love story there, as well, even though the ending takes an extremely dim, depresssing view of how life can be. I see Hardy as a great story teller first with social commentary as secondary. If that is not true then, I have it backwards. Still, his novels are great stories in and of themsleves...as loves stories and as wonderful descriptive narratives about the country in and around Dorset.
