  Thank you for the comprehensive reply. I am concluding my part of this 
(it's all in my book anyway) To my mind Tess had no choice but to stay on 
working at Trantridge. She was responsible for -- had taken on the 
responsibility of  -- supporting her family. This she did, duty bound, 
until she became pregnant.

Yes , I like the phrase you quote from Fraser  - it sound very Hardyan.
