[hardy-l] quotation source

[John Farrell]

Lance Butler, in the essay collection Celebrating Thomas Hardy, p 46,  
quotes Hardy as saying "Literature is the written expression of  
revolt against accepted things," but he gives no source other than  
saying that Hardy made the comment while writing Return of the  
Native.  Can anyone put me on to the source?
