Keith, thank you for bringing my attention to the contradiction in my thoughts. I should have said that the killing of the horse is POSSIBLY EITHER analogous to Tess's killing of the birds OR symbolic of her rape, BUT certainly not both. . .but I can't take it back: that's the danger of posting naked, unrevised thoughts to a public forum. I further plead guilty to comparing material in a serial that hasn't finished its run to material in a novel I know very well--perhaps in the TV program there is a bird-killing scene, which would make my analysis of Prince's execution superfluous; and perhaps Tess escapes from the gallows and she and Angel live a life of peace and prosperity in Argentina, making my comparison to Tess's execution out of bounds as well. Who knows?
One thing I do know is that the director meant SOMETHING by changing the way Prince dies. His lingering shot of the smoking gun is a clear indication that the change is not arbitrary. I'd like to find out what the director meant by the change, and I may err in my attempts to find the answer.
Now serving lunch,
Paul
