Collagen lips?: I had the same thought, Dale. I found this image of Gemma
from *St Trinian's* -- what do you think? As to pace which, in this
production allows for more effective character development, I agree with
Paul. Although the Victorian method of serialising novels demanded an
element of "cliffhanger" technique at the end of each number, Hardy
sustains his plot with pure drama, crises that seem natural and inevitable
rather than contrived, and I feel the Masterpiece version achieves a
similar fluence.

I would, though, have preferred to see Hardy's Tess stemming the flow of
blood at Prince's death even if the merciful gent has to take up shotgun to
put the poor creature out of its misery. Tess's instinct to take action and
her earthy lack of squeamishness is well illustrated in this episode (not
to mention the underlying theme of "bloodying" Tess).

All best wishes,
Rosemarie
