That would certainly mitigate the directorial offence against logic, while compounding the directorial gratuitous meddling. What's the point of making it not a mail-cart, except to facilitate the introduction of an obtrusive gun?  But the fact that I was seeing events so unclearly as not even to have registered that it possibly wasn't a mail-cart may indicate the problem the director was facing in translating this night-time scene into visual terms that a television audience could actually see  -- even if, as it turns out, this member of the audience couldn't!
