Agree, if you mean that Tess might not have fully worked out in her mind
the consequences of having a child out of wedlock. Disagree, if you
mean that Tess did not understand that a dalliance might result in
pregnancy.

Seems like a bootstrap argument. I don't doubt there are scores of
Victorian literary portraits of country girls who fail to understand the
consequences of sexual involvement, since that is what the conventions
of the time (and editors) would desire. I'm just saying such portraits
were not realistic. The prevalence of wizards in medieval romances does
not strengthen my belief in their existence.
