Yes, Paul, I thought you were referring to the original serial. Apologies. 
Also, I meant that the shooting of Prince is a BBC directorial inspiration 
-- it isn't Hardy so why are we quibbling about it. (the rest of your 
conversation is well understood already).  The cart in the Masterpiece 
Theater version looks like a rather smart chaise and is drawn by a pair and 
has lights. It's also travelling at one heck of a pace: the mail carts were 
known for their speed and they had to carry lights. That's all we have to 
go on.
