Please excuse us if we do not get round to reading your book on Hardy's
book, Mr Efron.
There has been such a welter of words on the List about Tess and the
misunderstandings, even misreadings of the original, that it has become
tiresome, tiring even, ploughing through the verbiage and repetition of the
private disputes that have arisen. To me it seems that the deliberate
choice to resign publicly from the List must be a strong one for those with
limited time, patience or even bandwith. I am surprised by Betty's
indulgence in allowing it to continue for so long in this case (the
repetition, I mean). The long-windedness of some contributions makes it
very trying, I find.
To sum up: long live the Hardy without the various self-indulgencies of the
neo-narratorial re-interpreters (to coin a phrase!)
Roy Buckle.
>In my book on Hardy's novel, I take a different approach to the problem
than any I have seen elsewhere. It is not a problem susceptible to
simplification. I find no mention of my effort in the many messages I
have been reading this past week on this list. Not surprisingly, I
believe I made a contribution to understanding. Regardless of whether
anyone might concur with what I wrote, may I ask if anyone here knows
about the approach I took?
This is simply a question.
