To go back a few postings, it occurs to me that the best secondary works for the context in which Tess experiences whatever she experiences in The Chase are Roy Porter and Lesley Hall's seminal *The Facts of Life: The Creation of Sexual Knowledge in Britain, 1650-1950* (with chapters such as 'The Victorian Polyphony, 1850-85'). It also comes with an extensive and excellent bibliography. Michael Mason's work on Victorian sexual attitudes also of value.
