Paul said, what Alec in the serial says to Tess is on the lines of "I expected this reaction (i.e., Tess's refusal of help), so I took the liberty of speaking to your mother, and she was happy to accept my offer." I don't have a copy of the serial edition at-hand, but that speech is different from the publication in novel form (I was using Wessex Edition, published in 1930 by Macmillan, pocket edition).
So maybe the screenwriters went back to the serial edition?
