[hardy-l] Tess - Alec not charged?

Would anyone care to suggest how it is that Angel is not charged with
aiding in the murder 'after-the-fact'? (Or, more improbably, is out
of jail in time for Tess' execution.) Would his class or being
married to the killer really have protected him from a charge? Also,
I have the impression he would not deny his knowledge of the murder
and aiding in the escape.
Also, I can imagine he may have had trouble defending himself against
a charge of being the actual murderer depending on how clear the
landlady's evidence was to who came and left was. It might seem to an
investigator like a standard crime of passion - husband kills wife's
lover? Even husband takes the rap to save his wife?
