Tony Fincham pointed out one of the most intriguing (to me) short sentences in the novel, or at least the latter part of the novel: About one page from the end of Chapter LVIII, Clare discerns in the dawn the approaching policemen: 'They all closed in with evident purpose. Her story then was true!'
To me, if Angel didn't believe that Tess really has killed Alec, it puts a slightly different slant on their little interlude. Yes, he's hiding out with her, which would indicate he knows that Tess is in danger and needs his protection. And -- finally -- Angel steps up and does the right thing by protecting her.
But, if he doesn't sincerely believe her, then her happiness as his "forgiveness" is an illusion. At least she never found out the truth. And, perhaps, Tess was at least intuitively right in saying that their happiness could not last.
