Paul correctly quoted that "in the introductory segment host Laura Linney solemnly told us that "Thomas Hardy was a dangerous man" who shocked the sensibilities of Victorian Britain." I thought she said this rather tongue-in-cheek. At first I thought it was given as a kind of "come on" so that people would watch the program. However, anyone who wasn't interested in seeing an adaptation of Tess or any Hardy novel wouldn't have tuned in anyhow. Still, I don't think the comment was intended seriously. Now the parental warning message is something else again. Mrs. Grundy is alive and well in America.
