[hardy-l] Alec as the offended

I asked my friend John Herold what he had in mind when he emailed me
that the new BBC film seemed to present Alec as the offended party--some
of the time.

He replied that in the early scenes between Alec and his Mother, the
Mother makes huge accusations, convicting Alec of being a no good man
just like his Father. Alec asks rhetorically if there could ever be
anything he could do that would please you, Mother. Obviously he doesn't
think there could. That can't make him feel very good about himself. Mom
has given up on him but continues to launch these remarks. He is being
put upon.

In what seems like futility, he blows some cigar smoke at her--she hates
the smell-- and leaves.
