[hardy-l] understanding Tess

One could make an argument to that effect, particularly considering how Tess
creates and recreates herself from choices she makes, conscious or
unconscious, at every moment; but there is still a level of determinism
(e.g. her "extinct" lineage, her place in time and society, law and
religious beliefs) which forms the backdrop in her struggles, over which she
has no control. The interplay between the two forces (a hallmark of great
literature perhaps) within Hardy's richly woven narrative tapestry is what
makes the story so compelling and practically palpable - to me anyway.
I am saying this as a lay person with no formal or scholarly study of
Hardy except for literature classes and my own deep and abiding interest in
Hardy's works and world view.
