Further to my comment on Jefferies' Toilers of the Field  I'd like to  
concur with Rosemarie's comment on the author.  Though Jefferies was  
in the shadow of Hardy,  Hardy seems to have kept a polite distance  
from his contemporary, suggesting that he perceived in him a worthy  
rival as a documentarian of country life - a bit too close for  
comfort !  Jefferies of course has always had a loyal following in  
England along with Williamson and Hudson
