The American macabre writer H.P. Lovecraft has a similar story, the  
1925 "In the Vault." The undertaker cuts the deceased's feet off so he  
will fit in the casket, but finds himself trapped in the vault and is  
discovered dead himself, with his feet missing – the corpse had its  
revenge. It's not one of his better stories, but it's available online

I imagine, people being what they are, this sort of incident happened  
everywhere. The shortening of a corpse to fit a casket, that is, and  
not the supernatural revenge …
