The statement which you came upon was false - see Millgate's (original) 
Biography
p 491 - after Mary Hardy's death in 1904, Hardy siblings continued as 
tenants until
April 1913 when they moved to Talbothays, voluntarily surrending a lease 
which had
been in the family for 112 years.

Although as Millgate observes, the original lifehold lease expied with 
Thomas Hardy II's
death in 1892 - but the family were allowed to continue as tenants.
