In addition to the books I recommended earlier, TTHA President  
Rosemarie Morgan's recent book  Student Companion to Thomas Hardy,  
published by Greenwood Press in 2007 is a very readable and jargon- 
free guide, especially useful to those, who like yourself, are just  
beginning to study Hardy.
