Hi Fraser -

I can't find anything helpful in answer to your question. In the case of 
FFMC TH did anticipate a 3-vol printing but I can find nothing to explain 
why it ended up as a double decker instead.

I suppose the house of Smith Elder would be the place to go? Unless some of 
TH's biographers have info on this.
