Now, now, Rosemarie. . .surely I, with my peregrinations all over the south-central U.S. in search of a university that would grant me tenure-track status, am more Jude than thee!
Anyway, to get back to Angelique's question, I can't offhand think of a CONTEMPORARY retelling of "Jude," but I find many parallels to Jude in the character of Bob, who occupies the first book ("The Midnight Bell") of Patrick Hamilton's "Twenty Thousand Streets Under the Sky" (1935). Bob's a well-meaning, hard-working waiter whose libido costs him his money, his pride, and his dreams. Hope that's of some help.
Paul
